I was saddened last week to learn that Maplin are shutting up shop. For anyone who may not have heard of them before they are (soon to be were) a UK / Ireland chain of specialist electronic stores that sold a range of small electrical products from DIY home security systems to DJ equipment.
I can’t remember when exactly they opened but they seemed to fill a gap in the market which was left by the demise of Peats electronics. These stores were always great places to get advice when setting out on small electronics projects. Peats was arguably ‘the’ place to go in Dublin for help advice and specialist kit for several generations. However, if you found the right person, the staff at Maplin tended to be incredibly helpful and often very knowledgeable too.
A big thing I always noticed was that their pricing always seemed to be a little on the high side and their stores were only ever located in difficult (we for me at least) places to access especially by car. Unfortunately, with the rise of YouTube and the price competitiveness combined with fast (and often) free shipping of Amazon, it must’ve been very tough for these guys to compete.
Goodbye Maplin, you will be missed, well sort of anyway! Oh, and before I sign off, I popped in this evening and they were offering some great ‘closing down’ prices in some areas so it may be well worth taking a quick look in if you happen to be passing a store over the next few days…
