Back in May I was having a business lunch in a cafe in Dublin. The waitress taking my order asked me if “I was the guys who makes the videos”. I must say I was quite flattered by the question. Sadly it turned out that my being recognised was more a function of coincidence than ‘fame’. It transpired that the waitress was a flatmate of former European MMA champion Ben ‘Spyder Monkey’ Forsyth, whom I’d made a video with a few months previous.
The encounter got really interesting from there. It transpired that this girl was from New Zealand and she had a sister called Dyalla. Dyalla whom I subsequently interviewed a few weeks later, had started making music for YouTuber Casey Neistat from her bedroom in New Zealand just a little over a year before. What’s even more incredible is that, so inspired by Casey and what he was doing on YouTube, she taught herself how to make music from scratch just so that she could produce beats for the guy.
For me Dyalla is a massive inspiration and the music she produces also happens to be absolutely A1! It’s well worth taking a listen to our interview here to get the full story. Suffice it to say that Dyalla has managed to carve out a nice income from producing music for Casey and not for many other YouTubers. Her music has even been used by Paul Logan, a YouTuber (although now somewhat controversial), with over 15 million views.
So go check out our interview and have a listen to Dyalla’s music on Spotify. It really is incredible to think that she has managed to build herself an international audience within 18 months or so and from pretty much a base of zero. Hopefully you will be as inspired as I was! Between the falling costs of technology and rise of the internet, no matter what your vertical or area of interest, Dyalla’s story aptly demonstrates that there really is every possibility for you to build something of value for an internatinal audience and to compete on a global scale from wherever you are in the world.
Got an idea for a project, product, service or business that you’d love to start in 2018?! Let me know in the comments!!
